Christmas is Right Around the Corner!

My sister-in-law sent out an e-mail a few days ago asking us if it’s too early to draw names for Christmas. In the past, I would have emphatically said “yes!” But now, with the economy the way it is, the earlier I can start shopping and spread out the enormous expense, the better! So with that, I am automatically beginning to get in the Christmas spirit.

I hope to get a tree up and pull out the large Christmas decorations out the day after Thanksgiving. Even though Thanksgiving is late this year, I still don’t think I can bring myself to pull out the large Christmas decorations before it’s over. But as soon as it is? I will be decorating!

We still don’t have a tree. Last year we had decided that we were going to get a fake tree, and some very nice friends of ours lent us their tree so that we could go shopping after Christmas and get one on sale. But after hours spent shopping the day after Christmas, John and I came up empty handed. I’m not sure if we’ll get a live one this year or just fork over the money for a full-price fake one and be done with it.

Once the tree is up, decorating is easy…we don’t have large Christmas ornaments, instead our ornaments represent something…there are the “my first Christmas” ones, and the “first Christmas married” ones, etc. I love pulling out each ornament and the memories that come flooding back to me. And last year the kids really got into helping, and they loved hearing what each ornament meant and whose it was.

I love Christmas…it’s by far my favorite holiday. Nativity scenes, Christmas lights, hot chocolate, church services, Christmas carols, and Christmas movies…it doesn’t get much better than that!

I have been trying to start the shopping early myself too! Economy, and mat leave mean I can no way leave all the shopping until December! I am also trying to restrain from putting the tree up too early this year to save on my power bill (I normally put it up just after remembrance day, as our thanksgiving is in October). We will see how that goes though.
