The Other "Me"

Last night I got to go to dinner with some friends. We didn’t go just anywhere for dinner, we went downtown for dinner.

We met early and went to the North Market to browse sans kiddos. Hubby and I take the kids there every Saturday, but I never get to walk around and just look at things because my daughter always wants something and my son is trying to get himself out of the stroller. So last night I got to look at plates, and flowers, and pastries, and candies.

After the market we walked to our restaurant. I felt like a completely different person! There were no kids downtown last night, so it was so easy to remember back to when hubby and I had just moved here and went out together and just enjoyed the city together. The ladies I was with also happened to be moms and were feeling the same type of things that I was feeling.

We ate at a very loud restaurant that had a strange philosophy of sharing plates with each other but were smaller than a normal entrée at another restaurant. I didn’t get it, but we did it and it was nice to try all kinds of different things. We were there for 2 hours! Just catching up and enjoying the atmosphere.

When we left, it was dark and absolutely gorgeous out! The temperature was perfect for a nice walk and there were tons of people out and about. We decided that we needed to do a dinner out together on a Friday night and really enjoy the night together.

I would never, ever trade my awesome family life to go back to that younger and carefree life, but it’s so nice, every once in a while, to remember that I am a young and vibrant girl with a unique personality….I’m not just “mom.”

I totally think it's in our best interests as moms to get out with the girls every once and a while. Like you, I would never EVER trade being a mom for anything in the world. However, some time to relax and enjoy by yourself gives you more energy to do the things you need to at home without getting cranky!! :)

Glad you enjoyed your night out!!

I'd never trade the life I have now, either. But, I'm with you. It's great to have that "us" time and not be Mom for a little while.

Glad you had a nice time...your downtown sounds really great :)

The Market looks like a neat place, so much to see huh?
You are so right, everyone needs to do something just for "themselves" I think it's a must.
We all tend to forget that we are more than mom's, wives, caretakers, employees etc and I think that's where a ton of stress comes in.
Go for it, have a "date night" with your friends it's so healthy, even for your family.
So glad you had a great time, and the weather even was perfect for you!!!!
Bet you woke up "re-freshed" this morning ,didn't you?

Sounds like you had a nice night out - we all need a break from family "routine" now and then.

It's nice to remember what it was like to be single and free to go out whenever we want.
It makes it even better when you can come home to your family and realize how much more wonderful life is now.

I am a firm believer that I am not just a mom. I love my child, but need my own space, and my own activities every once an awhile. In the end I think it makes me a better mom ;)
